Invisalign is less noticeable, more comfortable, removable, and easier to clean than traditional metal braces with brackets and wires.

Since you have to wear each set of Invisalign aligners in the series for about two weeks, you may be concerned about keeping them clean. Properly cleaning your Invisalign aligners is essential for good oral hygiene and to prevent them from becoming dull and dingy. It’s also easy and takes only a few minutes so it will become part of your daily oral hygiene routine.

To avoid discolouration, bacteria build-up, and odour, here are a few tips for keeping your Invisalign aligners clean and discrete.

Don’t Eat or Drink While Wearing Your Invisalign Aligners

While you can drink water while wearing your Invisalign aligners, avoid drinking anything that can stain them. The trays are made from a thin 3D-printed plastic for your comfort and are unsuitable for chewing food.

If you are in a restaurant, I suggest going to the bathroom and rinsing them before placing them in their case. After your meal, you can brush your teeth and put your Invisalign aligners back in your mouth.

Clean Your Teeth and Your Invisalign Aligners Each Morning and Evening

You are going to be wearing your Invisalign aligners for 20-22 hours per day, so you will want to keep them clean.

While you were sleeping bacteria collected in your Invisalign trays, so get into the habit of cleaning them when you brush your teeth in the morning. Do this again before you go to bed to prevent plaque and bacteria build-up.

How to Clean Invisalign

Clean your Invisalign aligners with clear anti-bacterial soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush (a baby toothbrush works well). Coloured soap can stain your Invisalign trays and they will lose their invisibility feature. Always use cool or warm water, never use hot water as you may melt your aligner.

Soak Your Invisalign Aligners Once a Day for a Thorough Cleaning

The best way to clean your Invisalign aligners is to soak them in cleaning crystals once a day. While you are eating, is a great time to do this.

Simply dissolve half a cleaning tablet into a cup of lukewarm water and place your aligners in the cup.

The crystals dissolve the plaque and kill the bacteria.

How to Clean Invisalign Aligners with Vinegar

You can also soak them in a solution of 1-part vinegar and 3-parts lukewarm water for 20 minutes.

How to Clean Invisalign Aligners with Baking Soda

Some of my patients soak their aligners in a solution of 1 tablespoon of baking soda dissolved in ½ a cup of water for about half an hour for great results.

How to Clean Invisalign After Soaking

Whichever method you choose to deep clean your Invisalign aligners, once they have finished soaking, gently brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush (used only for this purpose) to remove any remaining plaque. Make sure you use small circular motions brushing the entire tray inside and out.

Rinse them in lukewarm water and then inspect them for tartar build-up, which appears as a cloudy film.

Do not use the following products to clean your Invisalign aligners:

  • Toothpaste because it is too abrasive.
  • Denture cleansers because they turn them yellow.
  • Coloured mouthwash because it will tint them.

Rinse Your Invisalign Aligners Each Time You Remove Them

To prevent dry saliva and bacteria from collecting in your aligners, I suggest that you rinse them each time you remove them. A quick swish under lukewarm water can help to reduce the build-up of plaque and bacteria. Brush or rinse your teeth too, if possible.

While eating, keep your aligners in their protective case to keep them free from contaminants. Your case will also need regular cleaning, just wash it with soap and water.

Brush and Floss Before Placing the Invisalign Aligners Back in Your Mouth

When possible brush and floss your teeth before placing the Invisalign aligners back in your mouth. Trapped food between your teeth can get stuck in the Invisalign trays and lead to tooth decay and cause the aligner to smell.
